Social Security: What You Need to Know Before You File

Your Retirement Income Foundation Starts Here

Social Security is often the cornerstone of retirement income for millions of Americans. But when and how you file can significantly impact how much you receive over your lifetime.

📅 When Can You File for Social Security?

Early Retirement: As early as age 62 (but benefits are reduced)

Full Retirement Age (FRA): Between 66 and 67, depending on your birth year

Delayed Retirement: Up to age 70, increasing your benefit by ~8% for each year you wait beyond FRA

👉The longer you wait, the higher your monthly check—permanently.

📝 How to File:

Online: https://www.ssa.gov – easiest and fastest method

By Phone: 1-800-772-1213

In Person: Visit your local Social Security office (appointment recommended)

💬 Our Tip: Don’t File Until You Have a Strategy

Filing for Social Security should be a strategic decision, not a spontaneous one. The timing impacts your entire retirement income picture, especially when combined with other income sources like pensions, annuities, and retirement accounts.

We can help you assess the right time to file, based on your health, income needs, family longevity, and financial goals.

What Everyone Wants To Know...

But Doesn't Know Who To Ask.

Paul Castner of C & K Healthcare Advisors has a licensed book on Social Security. This book is designed to answer your questions and fears around the Social Security process.

Understanding Original Medicare (Parts A & B)

How It Works:

Original Medicare is a federal health insurance program consisting of:

Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care.

Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.

2025 Premiums & Deductibles (Estimates):

Part A: Premium: $0 (if you've paid 40 quarters); Deductible: $1,632 per benefit period.

Part B: Premium: ~$174.70/month (income-based); Deductible: $240/year.

Out-of-Pocket Costs:

20% coinsurance after deductible (no out-of-pocket maximum).

No prescription drug coverage included (Part D needed).

Medicare Advantage (Part C / MAPD)

What It Is:

MAPD plans are offered by private insurance companies and bundle Medicare Parts A, B, and usually D (prescription drugs), often with additional benefits.

Pros:

✅ Low or $0 premiums in many areas

✅ Includes extra benefits (dental, vision, hearing, gym)

✅ One-card convenience

✅ Annual out-of-pocket max for protection

Cons:

⚠️ Limited provider networks (HMO or PPO)

⚠️ Prior authorizations may be required

⚠️ May not be ideal for frequent travelers or specialists out-of-network

Medigap (Medicare Supplement Plans)

What It Is:

Medigap plans work alongside Original Medicare to help cover the 20% gap and other out-of-pocket expenses not paid by Parts A & B.

Pros:

✅ See any doctor who accepts Medicare

✅ Very predictable out-of-pocket costs

✅ Great for frequent travelers

Cons:

⚠️ Monthly premiums (often higher than MAPD)

⚠️ No built-in dental/vision/prescriptions (must be added separately)

⚠️ Subject to underwriting if enrolling outside of guaranteed issue window
